Student's Guide to the Library
Students are welcome to visit the library before and after school, and during morning break; however, if a class is in session, students should make arrangements to come to the library at another time. Please obey the signs which may be posted on the door.
Library/ID cards:
You will be issued a library card when you enroll at GCHS. You should always bring your card with you when you come to the library. You must have it to check out books. Never let anyone borrow your library card. You are responsible for all materials checked out with your card. If you need a new library card, please stop at the circulation desk and complete a request form. A replacement card will cost 50¢.
Check Out:
Books may be checked out for 3 weeks. You may renew your books for an additional 3 weeks if the books are not on hold for another student. Return all books to the book drop located in the circulation desk. As long as you are responsible, there is no limit as to how many books you may check out.
Sign-in/Sign-out:
Students who visit the library during class time and who are not accompanied by a teacher must sign in at the circulation desk each time they arrive in the library and sign out when leaving.
Copies:
All color copies/printing cost 25¢ per page. Printing for school does not cost, but please do not print excessively. To avoid unnecessary printing, please use the "Print Preview" option under "File" to determine if you need the entire document. Please print only the pages you need. If you do not know how to print only a selection of a web document, I’ll be happy to show you. If you need copies made, please ask me or the library aide for assistance.
Internet Use:
You may access the Internet in the library unless your parents have requested that you not be allowed to do so. The library media specialist has the right to deny access to any student who misuses the Internet resources or uses the Internet for purposes other than legitimate school-related research. We expect all students to abide by the guidelines set forth in the “Acceptable Use Policy” published in the GCHS Student Handbook.
Reading Counts:
Reading Counts is a program similar to AR because it allows you to take quizzes over books you have read. However, at the high school, Reading Counts is extra credit and not required. All the freshmen English teachers (and some upper level English teachers) allow you to earn extra credit for reading books and passing the quizzes. Books that qualify for Reading Counts have the yellow spine label.
Behavior:
Your conduct in the library should follow the guidelines set forth in the student handbook. Please remember that others are in the library to study or to gather research. Please be considerate of their needs. When you finish your work, please return all items to their original locations, always push your chair under the table and pick up all of your materials, papers, etc. It’s your school and your library, take pride in it!
I am here to help you…please ask me! I am Lynda Hiles, your GCHS Librarian..
